Dad’s Root Beer:

Dad’s is one of America’s most popular soft drinks. The beverage was developed in Chicago in February of 1937, and its unique and delicious flavor has earned it a loyal following. Chicago Distilled Water & Beverage Company filed the first Dad’s trademark registration on September 24,1938. The Dad’s Root Beer Company, Chicago, filed a trademark registration February 14, 1939.

Dad’s further distinguished itself as a brand and as an industry innovator when it became the first product to use the six-pack format invented by the Atlanta Paper Company in the 1940s. Dad’s also introduced the half-gallon bottle, becoming the first brand to market this size.

Dad’s was marketed as a “family” – Papa was a half gallon size, Mama was a full quart, and the Junior size, available in 7oz or 10oz, consisted of six bottle carry-outs.

The Monarch Beverage Company of Atlanta acquired Dad’s from I.C. Industries/Chicago in 1986. At the time – Dad’s was distributed by the Coca-Cola bottler network, with twelve million cases sold annually. It held the second largest share of the root beer segment, behind A&W.

In 2007, Dad’s was purchased along with the Sun Crest, Dr. Wells, and Bubble Up brands by Hedinger Brands, LLC and licensed to The Dad’s Root Beer Company, LLC. The company headquarters is now located in Jasper, Indiana.

This nostalgic brand celebrated its 70th Birthday in 2007! With a new dedication to expanding the distribution network across the country, the brand looks forward to continued growth and customer support.
